About Madill

It all started for blacksmith Sam Madill when the coal ran out. He’d been working the mining industry in British Columbia in the early 20th century. But things went bust and fortunes faded. Luckily, Madill saw a new opportunity in repairing logging equipment. Forestry in B.C. and the Pacific Northwest was exploding and so was the demand for equipment. Madill founded the business that bears his name in 1911.

The company stuck to repairs for many years. It diversified in 1955 by developing the first portable spar yarder, a type of logging vehicle still in use today. In the 1970s and ’80s, Madill added swing yarders and other forestry equipment to its product line.

Sidney, British Columbia-based Nicholson Manufacturing acquired Madill in 2011. It continues to make forestry equipment bearing the Madill name from a 110,000 square-foot plant in B.C.
